Fundraising should be fun - it's in the name! But it's also important to make sure we keep everything safe and legal.
This page highlights the main factors to consider when planning your fundraising, however the information here is not exhaustive. Make sure to take a look at the Fundraising Regulator and Chartered Institute of Fundraising to learn more about ethical and responsible fundraising.
Health and Safety
- Make sure any equipment is in good working order and make sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Follow food hygiene rules if you’ll be serving food at your friends and make sure any allergens are clearly labelled.
- If you’re holding a large event, it’s a good idea to have a first aider present and enough people there to supervise.
- You can find more advice on risk assessments here.
- The government’s Health and Safety Executive website has more guidance on running safe events.
Gambling & licenses
Events like raffles and lotteries have strict rules and sometimes require a license. You can find out more on the Gambling Commission website, or get in touch with us at fundraising@thehygienebank.com if you have any questions about your event.
If you’re holding your event in a public space, you might need a license. Check this with your local council as early as possible, before you get too deep into planning.
You might need Public Liability Insurance if your event is open to the public. Usually this will be covered by your venue, but make sure to check well in advance so you can get your own cover if needed.
Cash handling
The easiest way to collect donations if by setting up a JustGiving page. However, if you will be handling cash:
- Keep it somewhere safe and secure.
- Make sure there are two people present to count and transport cash.
- Use secure container, clearly labelled with The Hygiene Bank’s branding. Contact us at fundraising@thehygienebank.com if to arrange this.
Our liability
We are so grateful for the time and energy given to fundraising for The Hygiene Bank! We are on hand to support you if you have any questions about your events or plans.
The Hygiene Bank accepts no liability for third-party fundraising events. The advice above is for guidance only, every event is different so please consider other risks that could be involved and seek further advice if needed.
